Wednesday evening once again offered clear skies so with an Osprey sighting still a possibility I headed across to Penclawdd. My arrival seemed to chime perfectly with a band of heavy cloud moving in but through the dull conditions I enjoyed watching a couple of Swallows hunting along the rapidly filling channel. Further out Shelducks and two Mute Swans could be seen but given the relative tranquillity it was clear that an Osprey wasn’t in the area. Moving on to Wernfrwdd a scan of the wooden posts also drew a blank until a passing Barry Stewart confirmed that it looked as if the Osprey had moved on. Clearly it wasn’t meant to be but I kept an eye on proceedings and enjoyed the comings and goings of at least three Grey Herons. Against a reddening sky they looked almost prehistoric, more Pterodactyl than modern day hunter.

As dusk approached the cloud began to disperse until in its final moments of descent the sun was able to break clear of its shackles. Across the flat marsh I had uninterrupted views as the sun once more melted away into the sea, a perfect opportunity to just soak in my surroundings with nothing more than birdsong for company. Bliss.

Driving home along the main road a higher vantage point revealed another new vista, one which literally took my breath away. The entire sky and water were bathed in a pinky purple wash though by the time I’d pulled the car over a little of that initial intensity had been lost.

A great way to sign off as the long Easter weekend beckoned and I promise this will be the last sunset for a while. Maybe.
