Some recent lax gardening resulted in a couple of Dandelions setting seed right outside my kitchen window. This is something I usually try and avoid at all costs as it invariably means I’ll have more of the blighters to contend with over the coming months. There was an unexpected benefit however in that our Bullfinch pair seemed to absolutely love them. Over a couple of days they slowly devoured the lot, usually just an arms length away on the other side of the glass. The result was an outstanding series of views and my bests shots of this species to date.

While we are on the subject of weeds I should point out the Mint that is in front of the female bird. Word of warning – definitely only ever plant it in a pot. I’ve got the stuff popping up all over the place!

Great photos. My Dandelions come in from the vacant land next door and the mint dies off in dry weather!

Bullfinches are such splendid birds! I always thought I'd seen "something" when I saw one.

Nice pictures – and good advice about the mint!

Great pics of the Bullfinch! Maybe while he's at it, you should think about collecting the dandelion leaves to make a salad. I actually love seeing dandelions bloom on my lawn and there a no close neighbors who would complain about it. Mint is a roadside plant here and I occasionally pick some leaves for a fruit tea.

I would love to have Bullfinches in the garden here … but for now, the Chaffinches are providing much strident song! Superb photos … I always find Bullfinches pretty camera-shy.

Wow thanks for all your comments again. Looks like everyone is a fan of the Bullfinches.

Lovely photos! Bullfinches are such bright, characterful birds. I didn't realise they liked dandelions so much!
